Seven of Julie's Bills Become Law

The Governor has announced his actions regarding the 800+ bills passed by General Assembly this year. Here's a breakdown.

Hogan vetoed 40 bills, including legislation Senator Jim Rosapepe and I sponsored to give counties more flexibility to cut local income taxes for low- and middle-income residents.

The Governor signed fewer than 300 bills. Among them were the Senate cross-files for two of my bills. Senator Malcolm Augustine and I worked together on legislation to help college students experiencing a mental health crisis. For the second year, Senator Nancy King and I sponsored a bill to provide a tax credit for low-income families with children. These have both been signed into law.

The bulk of the bills (about 60%) will become law without the Governor's signature, including five bills I sponsored. Legislation is a team effort and I'm grateful for the partnerships of Senator Clarence Lam, Senator Shelly Hettleman, and Senator Cory McCray, as well as the numerous advocates who helped get these bills across the finish line.

Lastly, a shout out to Matt Harrington in my office for his invaluable research skills as we developed and worked these bills.
